This lovely place is a favorite nearby destination to meet with friends and spend the day. Located on Montauk Highway in Great River, it is a hop, skip and a jump from home but you will feel as though you entered another era! The former estate was donated to the Long Island State Park Region by Mrs. Bayard Cutting in honor of her husband, William Bayard Cutting, “to provide an oasis of beauty…” The Arboretum, known as a “museum of trees,” was designed by the famous architect, Frederick Law Olmstead in 1887. If you are a Master Gardener searching for specific genus and species, or just a visitor who craves the quiet beauty of nature, this is the perfect daytrip for you! There is something here for everyone; children’s activities, art exhibits, a farm, gift shop, and the charming, Hidden Oak Café located inside the Manor House. What an enjoyable place to spend the day!
