Looking for something to do on these hot summer days? How about a rainy day? The Montauk Point Lighthouse is a wonderful attraction for anyone looking to pass time and get a little blast into the past of Long Island.
The Montauk Point Lighthouse was first lit in 1797, making it the fourth oldest active lighthouse in the United States. It is located on the Easternmost point of Long Island, right at the point where the Long Island Sound meets the Atlantic Ocean. This lighthouse was named a National Historic Landmark back in 2012, solidifying it as a must-see when on Long Island.
Climbing the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse is more worth it than you might think. You get to enjoy a view of the endless ocean looking eastward, and you can see the landscape of the beaches on either side of you. You also get in a great leg workout too, no gym necessary. Once you make it back down to the bottom, there is a gift shop waiting for you near the entrance where souvenirs and Montauk merchandise are available for purchase. On the way back to the car, do not forget to stop for food at the George’s Lighthouse Café, where you can fulfill your hunger from the trek up and down the lighthouse. Here you can find burgers, sandwiches, and a good selection for the kids. At George’s, they also offer a soup of the day, which is convenient for those who enjoy a surprise. Make sure that you are making the most out of your trip to Montauk Point by capping it off with a meal and a great view of the ocean. A day at the Montauk Point Lighthouse is a day well spent. It is a great way to take a look back into Long Island’s past and get a wonderful view of the land and seascapes. Visiting the Lighthouse is a great day for the family, for the kids, and for you.
